Texas Golf Course Review

Kingwood Cove Golf Club

Kingwood Cove Golf Club in Kingwood, about 20 miles outside of Houston, is a value oriented championship design that originally opened for play in 1967. Rated with 3 1/2 stars (out of five) by Golf Digest Places to Play, this facility features a nice variety of holes along a terrain that invites walkers (walking is allowed at all times), and is very player friendly, yet especially for beginners and high handicappers.

The property features a grass and mat range plus putting and chipping green. Clubhouse facilities include a snack area and outdoor patio with lunch items and beverages available, plus a small pro shop. There is an event's pavilion with tournament capabilities, and PGA instruction is available.

On course golfers will find yardage markers on the cart paths at 100, 150 and 200 yards, with posts on the fairways at 100 and 150. Color coded flags indicate the day's front, middle or back hole locations. There are 3 sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 6722 yards/118 slope, 6211 yards/114 slope and 5601 yards with a 114 slope for women hitting from the red tees.

As these ratings indicate, this is a user friendly design that is not intimidating for novice players. The level terrain is tree lined but with plentiful room off the tee. Greenside, golfers will encounter medium sized mildly sloped putting surfaces that often are flanked by one or two sand bunkers and some gentle swales. There are 33 sand traps situated along the fairways or near the greens, and water hazards comes into play on 7 holes.

The opening hole plays significantly uphill and the par four ninth plays considerable downhill, with the rest of the holes featuring level topography. Number 8 - a short par four, is perhaps the prettiest hole on the course, with a daunting pond situated just in front and to the right of the green.
