WINDROSE GOLF CLUB (281-370-8900)
Texas Golf Course Review
Windrose Golf Club in the town of Spring about 20 miles north of Houston, is a Rick Forester 7200 yard championship design that has been rated 4 stars (out of five) by Golf Digest Places to Play! This challenging, yet player-friendly layout opened for public play in 1988, and is one of the best golf values in the northern Houston region.
The mildly undulating fairways are generously wide, even those that are tree lined, as they wind along a fairly level topography in an upscale residential community. The varied terrain includes century old live oaks, towering pines and numerous natural wetlands. The course is known to be challenging from the back tees yet quite user friendly from the alternate sets.
There are four tee boxes on each hole, that play to distances and slopes measuring 7203 yards/128 slope, 6608 yards/122 slope, 6069 yards/117 slope and 5355 yards with a slope of 117 for ladies hitting from the forward tees. On course sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and cart paths have markings at 100, 150 and 200 yards. There are 150 yard stakes in the center of the fairways on all par fours and fives, and color coded flags indicate the day's front, middle or back pin placements. Tee boxes are also marked.
The turf includes baby bermuda on the fairways and Flora Dwarf on the medium sized, mildly sloped putting surfaces, which were in great shape on our late April visit. Golfers will encounter plentiful room off the tee, and greenside as well. There are gentle undulations on the fairways, and understated mounding borders many of the green complexes. 31 soft sand bunkers are spread throughout the design, and water comes into play on nine holes.
The back side has some particularly interesting golf holes, with ponds and wetlands often situated immediately in front of the greens. There is generally bail out room, but some accurate approach shots are required. Most greens are slightly elevated, with just 1 or two sand traps nearby. Players will often be able to recover from slightly offline approaches.
On property is a full service practice facility with grass and mat range, short game area with sand bunker, plus large putting green. The clubhouse features a pro shop, locker rooms with showers for men and women, and a restaurant/lounge serving breakfast sandwiches and lunch items. This is a nicely conditioned course, with attention also applied to landscaping and aesthetic features. We highly recommend it!
