WILDCAT GOLF CLUB (713-413-3400) Lakes Course
Texas Golf Course Review
General Information
Wildcat Golf Club in Houston presents 36 holes of championship golf and is recognized as the preferred golf property of Houston's professional sports franchises. The Highlands course in particular, affords spectacular views of the downtown Houston skyline, and also of the Astrodome and Reliant Stadium. Designed by Roy Case, the property is one of the best golf values in the southern Houston area.
On property is full service clubhouse that can accommodate outings/events for up to 288 people. There is a pro shop, locker rooms and showers for men and women, plus restaurant/lounge with breakfast and lunch items served daily. Practice facilities include a targeted grass range, short game area with sand bunker, and large putting green. Even the golf carts provide nice amenities - with mounted coolers and rear covers that protect golf bags during inclement weather.
Both courses use a marking system that includes sprinkler heads measures to the center of the green, and with 100, 150 and 200 yard markers on the fairways and cart paths of all par fours and fives. Pin placement sheets with the day's hole locations are provided to each golfer. This information comes in handy on these large, undulating greens - which feature some of the best putting turf in the region - Tif Eagle.
LAKES REVIEW
Like the Highlands course, the Lakes features a significant number of holes that play uphill - demanding one or two clubs extra on the approach. The front nine begins dry, but from holes 7 through 15, water is a prominent feature in the design. Most of these hazards are not mere window dressing - they actually demand some carries and thoughtful shot strategy. There also are approximately 51 soft sand bunkers situated near the landing zones or greenside.
Five sets of tee boxes play to distances and slopes measuring 7016 yards/135 slope, 6535 yards/131 slope, 6045 yards/114 slope, 5482 yards/103 slope for men and 129 for women, and 4906 yards with a slope of 98 for men and 111 for ladies hitting from the forward tees. As these slopes indicate - the course is challenging from the back tees, but very playable form the forward sets. All the photos in this review are of the Lakes Course.
With two championship courses, comprehensive practice facilities and nice clubhouse amenities, Wildcat is a popular venue for outings and tournaments. The property also hosts the Golf Performance Group - which provides individual, group and corporate instructional programs and clinics, with state of the art video programs, club fitting and repair also available.
