Wildcat Golf Club - Highlands Course

General Information

Wildcat Golf Club in Houston presents 36 holes of championship golf and is recognized as the preferred golf property of Houston's professional sports franchises. The Highlands course in particular, affords spectacular views of the downtown Houston skyline, and also of the Astrodome and Reliant Stadium. Designed by Roy Case, the property opened for public play in 2002, and with prime rates including cart topping off at near $70 in 2007, is one of the best golf values in the southern Houston area.

On property is full service clubhouse that can accommodate outings/events for up to 288 people. There is a pro shop, locker rooms and showers for men and women, plus restaurant/lounge with breakfast and lunch items served daily. Practice facilities include a targeted grass range, short game area with sand bunker, and large putting green. Even the golf carts provide nice amenities - with mounted coolers and rear covers that protect golf bags during inclement weather.

Both courses use a marking system that includes sprinkler heads measures to the center of the green, and with 100, 150 and 200 yard markers on the fairways and cart paths of all par fours and fives. Pin placement sheets with the day's hole locations are provided to each golfer. This information comes in handy on these large, undulating greens - which feature some of the best putting turf in the region - Tif Eagle.

HIGHLANDS REVIEW

The Highland course is designed on some extremely hilly terrain, with tee shots often beginning from elevated tees, playing over ravines or natural areas, then climbing back uphill to the sloping green complexes. Trees do not come into play on this rolling terrain, but 46 strategically placed sand bunkers that are located near the landing zones off the tee or greenside, help to provide challenge and esthetic beauty. Water comes into play on just two holes, but golfers will encounter some significant carries off the tee.

A generous number of holes play uphill on the approach - so 1 or even 2 extra clubs are often needed. There is often room greenside, but grassy swales and collection areas will challenge golfer's abilities to get up and down. Five sets of tee boxes play to distances and slopes measuring 6954 yards/138 slope, 6549 yards/134 slope, 6116 yards/122 slope, 5617 yards/114 slope for men and 127 for women, and 5005 yards with a slope of 106 for men and 111 for ladies hitting from the forward tees. While the back tees feature some intimidating tee shots, the 2 forward sets take most of the trouble out of play - making this a user friendly layout for high handicappers and resort golfers.

With two championship courses, comprehensive practice facilities and nice clubhouse amenities, Wildcat is a popular venue for outings and tournaments. The property also hosts the Swanson School of Golf - which provides individual, group and corporate instructional programs and clinics, with state of the art video programs, club fitting and repair also available.
