QUAIL CREEK GOLF CLUB (512-353-1665)
Texas Golf Course Review
Quail Creek Golf Club in San Marcos is a 7000 yard championship design featuring tight tree lined fairways and small, target greens that will challenge the abilities of all levels of players. This traditional layout features 4 par fives and 4 par threes, to compliment the 10 par fours which include a mix of long and strategic holes.
Five sets of tee boxes play to distances and slopes measuring 7006 yards/slope N/A, 6312 yards/121 slope, 5933 yards/116 slope, 5323 yards/106 slope and 4897 yards with a slope of 116 for ladies hitting from the forward sets. As the slope ratings indicate, this is a player friendly design from regular tees, but those hitting from the tips will need both accuracy and distance off the tee.
On property is a clubhouse with Callaway Pro shop, featuring golf shoes, accessories and apparel, and there also is a tennis pro shop. The Hill Country Grill Restaurant has a full bar and big screen TV. San Marcos' best banquet facility is on property, and a swimming pool is available for tennis and golf members. Practice facilities consist of a targeted grass range plus putting and chipping greens. Top notch instructors are available for lessons of all types.
On course yardage markers are located on the fairways and cart paths at 100, 150 and 200 yards, and color coded flags indicate the day's front, middle or back hole locations. There are coolers and bal & club washers on each cart.
With tree-lined but generally wide fairways, golfers will be challenged by the small, round elevated greens that often slope from back to front. Mis-hit approaches may result in tricky up and down opportunities, with little room for error. A good short game, including the high arcing lob shot, will certainly come in handy here.
The par three 8th (at 233 yards - the toughest hole on the course) and par 5 ninth make for some interesting finishing holes - with both requiring approaches over ponds that rest directly in front of the greens. This a value golf experience. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
