PLUM CREEK GOLF COURSE (512-262-5555)
Texas Golf Course Review
Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle just south of Austin, is designed among 235 acres in the beautiful Hill Country, surrounded by plentiful wild flowers. The layout features significant water hazards, some bunkered green complexes, and an abundance of high grasses, with fairways that are separated by native bush and mounding. Operated by Foresight Golf, over 1 million dollars was invested to create a state-of-the-art practice facility, convert the 10th hole into an outstanding Par 3, increase irrigation systems, add Turfgrass to improve several fairway corridors, and construct 18 new tee-boxes to improve play-ability and versatility with five sets of tees for each hole. The end result is spectacular and the course has received several accolades!
Long hitters will enjoy playing from the tips that measure over 7100 yards, and three alternate sets afford players of all skill levels with an opportunity to choose a set that matches their game. The four tee areas play to distances and slopes measuring 7132 yards/125 slope, 6443 yards/120 slope, 5754 yards/113 slope and 4876 yards with a slope of 118 for women hitting from the forward tees.
There is a targeted grass range plus chipping and putting green. The clubhouse features a fully stocked pro shop, banquet hall and conference center that can accommodate up to 350 guests plus restaurant that offers an extensive menu.
Bunkering is strategic but understated, with just 18 low lipped, non penal sand traps located near the landing zones or green-side. Except for a few holes, there is plentiful room off the tee and usually lots of room for error near the putting surfaces. Some of the green complexes are raised, but generally speaking bump and run chips can usually be utilized.
Water comes into play on 7 holes - some of which are not indicated on the scorecards. Beware of the natural area/pond that rests just in front of the green on number 6. On the back side the par five 11th and par four 14th also have hazards protecting the green. The initial holes have fairly level putting surfaces, but throughout the design golfers will find variety, with some very undulating, sloping greens.
Overall the terrain is fairly level, though there are some holes that feature rolling fairways. Beginners and high handicappers can enjoy a relaxing round here, and avid players will be challenged by the distance from the tips (and by wind). Prices are extremely reasonable!
