Texas Golf Course Review 4/14/07

Pecan Valley Golf Club

Pecan Valley, located just 6 miles from downtown San Antonio's famed riverwalk area, is recognized as one of the best upscale daily fee courses in the region. Host of the 1968   PGA Championship and the 2001 US Amateur Public Links Championship, this course has been ranked among the Top 25 Courses in Texas by the Dallas Morning News.

Set on 200 lushly wooded acres, the terrain at Pecan Valley features rolling hills and immaculate conditioning from tee to green. The picturesque Salado Creek meanders along the property, providing aesthetics and challenge. The terrain is quite rolling, with several of longer holes playing from elevated tees over valley fairways to raised green complexes.

Most of the holes are lined with mature trees, but there is usually plentiful room. Mis-hit approaches however, will often result in tricky up and down situations in the sloping mounds that frequently run off the back and sides of the small to medium size putting surfaces. Approximately forty nine sand bunkers are located about the course and water comes into play in the form of ponds or crossing creeks on 7 holes.

There are four sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 7047 yards/132 slope, 6564 yards/127 slope, 6095 yards/126 slope and 5310 yards with a slope of 118 from the forward tees. On course yardage markers are posted at 100, 150 and 200 yards with stakes on the fairways at 150 yards on all par fours and fives. Pin placement sheets are mounted on each cart to indicate the day's hole locations.

On property is a grass range and large practice green for putting and chipping. The clubhouse has a pro shop and restaurant/lounge featuring lunch items. Some of the more memorable holes are featured on the back side. The par five 13th begins uphill, doglegs left and finishes towards a severely raised green. Number 15 is a beautifully wooded dogleg right and the landing zone on the finishing hole is split by a creek before the terrain climbs towards the green.

Pecan Valley is conveniently located and is priced right. The up and down nature of the topography will keep players on their toes. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
