OLYMPIA HILLS GOLF COURSE & CONFERENCE CENTER (210-945-4653)
Texas Golf Course Review
Olympia Hills Golf Course in Universal City is a beautiful layout designed by the Finger, Dye, Spann Group and features dramatic elevation changes of 50 feet or more on 7 holes. Picturesque live oaks are also part of the breathtaking scenery.
The undulating topography includes man-made mounds that border the rolling fairways and green complexes, making recoveries and greenside up and downs a task. The initial holes are particularly scenic - as each features a tee shot from an elevated tee or to a raised fairway. Frequently, golfers will be teeing over valleys to raised green complexes that are protected by bunkers and slopes that run down on one or both sides. Accurate iron play is a necessity to score well here.
On property is a full length range and one of the area's premier short game facilities. This includes 10,000 square feet of putting, chipping and practice greens, with a sand bunker. The 8,000 square foot clubhouse is raised 100 feet above the golf course, providing fine views from the restaurant and banquet/conference center. The meeting and banquet rooms can accommodate groups of up to 250 people. There also is a pro shop with apparel and accessories.
Four sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring 6923 yards/132 slope, 6553 yards/128 slope, 6023 yards/122 slope and 5534 yards with a slope of 128 for women hitting from the forward tees. Though not over long, the gold tees (6023 yards) are a good test for the high to mid handicapper, especially on the first visit, as course knowledge - particularly knowing the proper adjustments in club selection, comes in handy here.
The layout provides a wonderful group of par threes. Numbers 5, 7, and 13 all play from extremely elevated tee boxes, and offer great views of the valley. Much of the design is thickly tree lined, though there are a group of holes that are fairly open on the back side. We counted 56 sand bunkers, and water comes into play on three holes. Most courses in the San Antonio region have undulating topography - but Olympia Hills is downright hilly. This is a gorgeous track - we highly recommend it!
