OAKHURST GOLF CLUB (281-354-4653)
Texas Golf Course Review
Oakhurst Golf Club in Porter, about 20 miles North of Houston is a beautiful Jay Reviere-Dave Marr 18-hole par 72 championship design built along a fairly level terrain that winds through a secluded residential community. The layout features a nice mix of open and tree lined fairways with manicured conditioning from tee to green.
Four sets of tees at Oakhurst play to distances and slopes measuring 7002 yards/125 slope, 6242 yards/119 slope, 5647 yards/115 slope and 5188 yards with a slope of 120 for women hitting from the forward tees. The tee boxes have measurements, as do sprinkler heads on all par fours and fives - to the center of the green. Color coded flags indicate the day's front, middle or back hole locations, and both the fairways and cart paths have markings at 100, 150 and 200 yards.
The course features 419 Bermuda playing surfaces and TifDwarf putting surfaces, that are medium to large in size and mildly sloping with some featuring crowns that run off the sides or backs. There are 52 sand bunkers situated along the landing zones or greenside and water hazards come into play on seven holes.
As the slope ratings indicate, this is a player friendly layout that can be enjoyed by all levels of golfers. There is generally significant room off the tee, and the green complexes also provide ample recovery room. Bunkers and mounding often protect the putting surfaces, but the fronts are generally open, inviting some easy low running chips.
On property are a driving range and practice green, with PGA instruction and player development programs available. The clubhouse features a grille with outdoor patio serving breakfast and lunch items, plus snacks and beverages. There also are changing areas with showers for men and women, and private event space for up to 250 people. This is a well cared for property, with friendly service that creates a comfortable and enjoyable golf environment.
