NORTHERN HILLS GOLF CLUB (210-655-4148)
Texas Golf Course Review
Northern Hills Golf Club, located just 15 minutes from downtown and the San Antonio Airport, is a traditional layout that features the highest technology in putting surfaces - the new Ultra Dwarf Mine-Verde turf - the same surface the pros putt on at PGA Tour facility, TPC Sawgrass.in Ponta Vedra. Northern Hills is known as an excellent venue for corporate outings and events, with banquet/outing facilities that can host up to 350 guests.
Besides the renovated green complexes, Northern Hills also features a completely new irrigation system that results in consistently good playing conditions. On property is a clubhouse with snack bar featuring breakfast items and a lunch menu, plus a pro shop. There is a 5,000 square foot ballroom with dance floor and 2 bar service areas, that can accommodate up to 300 guests. There also are meeting room configurations that can host between 25 and 120 people.
Practice facilities consist of a targeted grass range plus putting and chipping green. On course the par fours and fives have yardage markers on the fairways and cart paths at 100, 150 and 200 yards, and 150 yard stakes are situated in the idle of the fairways. Color coded flags indicate the front, middle or back pin placements.
The terrain is quite rolling, with gentle elevation changes from tee to pin. The par threes are long (between 187 and 207 yards) and number four is the toughest of the group - playing 207 from the tips - and considerably uphill. Water comes into play on five holes and approximately 31 sand bunkers can be found on the course - mostly greenside.
Three sets of tee boxes play to distances and slope measuring 6649yards/129 slope, 6117yards/123 slope, and 5019 yards with a slope of 110 for men and 117 for ladies hitting from the forward tees. Golfers should have no problem hitting the lading zones on the spacious fairways, which are quite open with just a scattering of trees.
The green complexes are slightly raised, and often have one or two bunkers on either side. There is significant recovery room for players to achieve up and downs, with gentle mounding protecting the medium sized, mildly sloping putting surfaces. Northern Hills is a good value golf experience with a bit of highland links flavor. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
