LONGWOOD GOLF CLUB (281-373-4100)
Texas Golf Course Review
Longwood Golf Club in Cypress about 10 miles from Houston, is a Keith Fergus/Harry Yewens course that has been awarded 3 1/2 stars (out of five) by Golf Digest Places to Play. This 27-hole layout plays to a maximum of 6,925 yards with a nice variety in hole design and with a price structure that makes it one of the area's top golf values. With a significant amount of obstacles, this course provides a fair challenge for players of all skill levels.
The topography is mildly rolling and features plentiful stately pines and hardwoods, in a secluded residential setting. Though tree-lined throughout, the course generally provides ample landing zones off the tee. The large, mildly sloped putting surfaces also have a reasonable amount of recovery room in the gentle grassy swales and mounds. There is a good variety in shapes, undulations, and sizes of greens, which feature TifDwarf Bermuda. Some of the complexes are quite raised, creating the need for accurate approaches.
Water comes into play in some shape or form on 10 holes, and there are 47 soft sand bunkers situated near the landing zones or green-side. Four sets of tee boxes play to slopes ranging from 139 to 112. The Pine nine is the longest of the three, with tees playing to 3518, 3311, 3054 and 2591 yards. The Post Oak course measures 3407, 3157, 2760 and 2503 yards. Palmetto is the shortest of the group but has the most bunkers (25), with tee boxes that play to 3240, 3002, 2696 and 2369 yards.
On property is a beautiful practice facility which includes a targeted range with mat and grass tee stations, a short game area with sand bunker, plus large putting green. The clubhouse includes a pro shop, locker rooms with showers and restaurant/lounge with adjacent outdoor patio serving breakfast and lunch items.
On course yardage plates are posted at 100, 150 and 200 yards on the fairways and cart paths, and sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green on all par fours and fives. There are also 150 yard stakes in the center of the 419 Bermuda fairways. Small markers on the flag sticks indicate front, middle or back hole locations.
Longwood is a fine golf facility, worthy of its mention in Golf Digest's recommended places to play. Located just northwest of downtown Houston, this is a highly recommend golf experience. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
