LAGO VISTA GOLF CLUB (512-267-1170)
Texas Golf Course Review
Now under new ownership, Lago Vista Golf Club is on its way to providing a good value and quality golf experience in the lake country Northwest of Austin. Some tender loving care is being applied to a course that certainly needed it. On our early spring 2007 visit, the fairways and greens were recovering from neglect, on a layout that features open, winding fairways with some significant elevation changes from tee to green.
The terrain is quite rolling, providing some elevated tees and raised fairways. Most holes provide ample room off the tee, with small to medium size, round green complexes that feature mildly sloping putting surfaces. Approaches are often downhill or uphill, with very few level holes. The par four ninth presents perhaps the best view of the area, as the greens rest at the bottom of a hill, with a significant drop affecting club selection. The valley beyond and a lake below from a picturesque backdrop for this signature hole. Number 15 has been selected as one of the Ultimate 18 Holes in Central Texas by public viewers of News 8 Austin - the Lone Star Golf Guide.
There are four sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 6579 yards/128 slope, 6198 yards/124 slope, 5822 yards/118 slope and 5122 yards with a slope of 118 for ladies playing from the forward tees. 100, 150 and 200 yard markers can be found on the fairways and cart paths, and small markers on the flagsticks indicate front, middle or back hole locations.
On property is a clubhouse with pro shop plus spacious restaurant/lounge serving beverages and lunch items, as well as a Sunday breakfast buffet. Practice facilities include a grass range and putting green. There are 36 sand bunkers situated near the landing zones of the rolling fairways or greenside, and water comes into play on just 1 hole (although a pond will be added in front of the third green).
This traditional links style design has 4 par fives and 4 par threes. Golfers may be surprised by the numbers of deer one will usually encounter on this property - and will be even more surprised that the animals do not run away. Stay & Play packages at the Highland Lake Villas (512-587-6126) and other nearby properties are available.
