LA CANTERA GOLF CLUB (210-558-6500) - Resort Course
Texas Golf Course Review
Golf Magazine has recognized La Cantera Hill Country Resort as one of "America's Best Golf Resorts", for the two championship courses and renowned Golf Academy. The Palmer Course opened in 2001 and plays over 225 acres set on 370 acres of rugged, natural terrain, with dramatic topography and scenery that includes waterfalls and magnificent landscaping. The Resort Course is carved from the walls of a limestone quarry and nestled amongst live oak trees, streams and wildlife of the Texas Hill Country. Dramatic elevation changes and spectacular scenery make this a visual stunner. Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskoph designed this layout.
An incredible practice facility is located adjacent to the Resort Course clubhouse. This 15 acre practice facility, with the Academy at La Cantera situated at the opposite end of the 450 yard range, includes the targeted grass range with complimentary practice balls of green fee paying guests, two putting greens and a beautiful short game area with sand bunker. The gorgeous clubhouse includes a spacious pro shop, wonderfully appointed locker rooms with showers, a restaurant/lounge plus meeting/board rooms.
The Resort Course provides 5 sets of tee boxes, that play to distances and slope measuring 7021 yards/134 slope, 6406 yards/127 slope, 6026 yards/119 slope, 5581 yards/113 slope and 4940 yards with a slope of 108 from the forward sets. As these ratings indicate, this layout is challenging from the two back tees - but affords a pleasant experience for resort guests from the three alternate tees. Pro Link GPS is standard on all carts, along with ball & club washers and ice chests. Sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and cart paths have 100, 150 and 200 yard markers.
There are 79 sand bunkers situated near the landing zones on the rolling, manicured fairways, or located near the large sloping greens which frequently have subtle ridges or crests. These quick and true rolling TifEagle putting surfaces will challenge the abilities of even avid golfers. There is a mix of tightly tree-lined and open fairways, with numerous elevated tees and several raised landing zones. Uniquely, the snaking par five 5th finishes with a downhill approach towards the main roller coaster at Texas Fiesta Six Flag's theme park. The seventh also features this unique view from perhaps the most interesting hole on the course, a short par four with plentiful bunkering and with a water hazard situated short right - a simply gorgeous golf hole! The par four 12th is unique, as it features an approach shot to a plateau green fronted by a landscaped stream and beautiful waterfall - reminiscent of Augusta National landscaping. Number 16 will draw the interest of big hitters (including women hitting from the forward tees), as this short risk/reward par four is reachable off the tee.
Both courses at La Cantera Hill Country Resort are Troon Golf properties - so visitors can expect top notch conditioning and service, to go with the exceptional course designs. This is an exceptional resort, providing amenities and service worthy of a word renowned golf property. We highly recommend a visit here.
