HOUSTON NATIONAL GOLF CLUB (281-304-1400)
Texas Golf Course Review
Houston National Golf Club - located about 15 miles from the city, is a 27-hole championship facility that was designed in the year 2000 by the team of Von Hagge/Smelek/Baril. This popular layout features a distinctive links style flavor over a rolling terrain with significant mounding and plentiful fairway bunkers. The mogul nature of the landing zones and the challenging raised green complexes make this one of the toughest courses in the Houston area.
The North, South and West nines have a total of 106 sand bunkers, and water comes into play on 13 of the 27 holes. There are 4 sets of tees that play to slopes ranging from 133 to 121 for men and 132 to 121 for women. All three layouts are quite long, with the South playing to tees that measure an astounding 3904, 3642, 3332, and 3044 yards. The North course plays to 3674, 3411, 3187 and 2842 yards, while the West design measures 3663, 3382, 3078 and 2721 yards. As the yardages indicate, this course is appealing to big hitters and those who like to grip it and rip it off the tee.
Finding the advantageous landing zones between the mounds of high grasses and deep fairway bunkers is also a formidable task. One of the most challenging aspects of a round here however, is the accuracy necessary to land on the greens in regulation. Miss to one side or the other on these sometimes severely raised and sloped complexes, and golfers may be playing "monkey in the middle" with the flag stick.
Golfers will have ample opportunity to warm up, as the practice facility is quite extensive. There is a double-ended grass and mat range, short game area with sand bunker, plus putting/chipping green. Uplink GPS - standard on all carts, provides important information with its hole diagrams, and also with its accurate measurements from tee to pin. In addition, 100, 150 and 200 yard markers are also posted on the rolling fairways. Each cart is also equipped with rear covers, to protect golf bags and clubs during inclement weather.
The clubhouse was undergoing extensive renovations on our April 2007 visit, and the new facility (scheduled to open in July) will include member and guest locker rooms, a restaurant and a banquet/outing room. The current facility has a pro shop, plus the Stonegate Grille Restaurant/lounge that serves breakfast all day and also has a nice lunch menu (great chicken Caesar salads!).
Be prepared to play your best - and also be prepared to enjoyed a challenging yet enjoyable golf experience. Houston National is conveniently located off the Northwest Hwy (290) just Northwest of Houston. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here..
